Dow Jones Sr. Director, Engineering, Search Services in PRINCETON, New Jersey

Job Description:

We are looking for a Senior Director who is eager to be part of a vibrant technology team. In your role, you will be leading a team of engineers focused on the Dow Jones Search platform, which includes content acquisition, content enrichment, search, alerting, and content retrieval. You will have opportunities to present new ideas that shape the future of platform software services which are, in turn, vital to robust business growth. You will manage engineers who play an important role in all stages of the product life-cycle, so we look for people who crave ownership, enjoy solving hard problems, and relentlessly improve software quality. We seek someone who can manage both complex technological solutions as well as the talented people who implement these solutions.


  • Manage a diverse, globally distributed, agile software development team.

  • Work with Business representatives to refine solutions that delight our customers.

  • Lead development teams to analyze project requirements, design, implement, document, test, and maintain a shared service platform in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Lead technical discussions and evaluate technology choices based on value, scalability, maintainability, and project delivery goals.

  • Support Dow Jones technical cultural values and independently drive solutions.

  • Research and evangelize the latest industry technologies.

  • Prioritize, manage and report on the status of efforts.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Computer Science or equivalent degree

  • 10+ years managing high-performance software development teams

  • Deep understanding of Computer Science fundamentals including service-oriented architectures, cloud computing, and behavior-driven development

  • Proven track record of translating business requirements into production-quality solutions

  • Substantial experience in building high performance, distributed systems that lend themselves to easy operation and capacity forecasting

  • Skill in decomposing projects into work items, estimating level of effort, conveying accurate project status on a regular basis, and managing project budgets

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with full-text search engine technologies including NLP, boolean searching, relevance ranking, concept searching, clustering, deduplication, etc.

  • Experience working with a wide variety of structured and unstructured data sources including relational and document databases and formats including text, images, audio/video, etc.

  • Define, develop and assist with Search Taxonomies/Categorization/Semantic Wording, etc.

  • Background deploying large, complex systems within a public cloud in a cost-effective manner

  • Experience building performant and scalable REST APIs using a microservice pattern
