Senior Director, Engineering is a senior technical leadership role in the Wall Street Journal’s Digital Experience Team (DXS). A Senior Director, Engineering is an engineer that sets strategic technical direction, gets buy-in from newsroom, technical and business stakeholders. The Senior Director, Engineering will be required to contribute to hands-on coding and help drive a plan through to fruition. They are passionate about technology and are able to accomplish their goals through innovation, collaboration, and communication as well as diving in to contribute themselves.
This Senior Director, Engineering will be focused on a variety of new technologies that form a key pillar for WSJ’s strategic growth goals. This work will primarily focus on the key strategic initiative around tailored news experiences. As a Senior Director, Engineering, you will be responsible for working cross-functionally to architect and build products that allow for both personalized content as well as tailored user experiences. You will also help lead the development of an experimental framework to help product teams implement “winners” faster and eventually develop and run tests themselves.
The Wall Street Journal engineering team is part of the Dow Jones Technology department. This position will play a pivotal role in ensuring our solutions align with the larger Dow Jones strategy for technology, with a view on building functionality that can be broadly adopted and reused by other teams and business units.
Design and lead development of key architectural initiatives to advance our platforms and technology
Work closely with journalists, product managers, designers and other engineering teams to design solutions that meet our business objectives.
Mentor and support junior engineers across all WSJ engineering teams
Define best practices and standards that lead to broad, positive change for both our teams and our technology
Contribute to and lead engineering culture initiatives like self-directed projects, hackathons and internal technical talks
Actively with Dow Jones Technology leadership groups such as the Architecture Technology Council (ATC)
Help shape our engineering standards and principles, and use processes such as RFC (request for comment) to enforce those standards.
Represent the needs of WSJ and Dow Jones engineering teams in strategic planning sessions with stakeholders across the business
An experienced engineer with several years in a lead or management role
A creative thinker and problem solver, able to distill complex problems down to actionable items with simple solutions
An expert in building robust, scalable architectures that serve millions of users daily
A proven leader, playing a central role in decision making for both technical and organizational issues
A passionate mentor, sought out by other employees as well as external teams and individuals
Well-versed in the news and media industry, possessing deep and broad knowledge of both current and emerging technologies that affect the business
