As our business has leaned more and more into membership, the need to articulate and follow through on a seamless experience across web and apps has become vital to our future success. We want to get closer to our customers and see their entire experience on platform as a fluid one, not separated by technological constraints and nuances, no longer equated with our platforms: iOS, Android, Web, etc. Our members expect a premium service, one that recognizes them and their habits across platform and device, that personalizes their experience, and leverages the best of OS and device, to suggest relevant content and experiences to them at the right time. We are looking for someone who can help us realize this vision. You will:
Own the WSJ on platform products, including WSJ.COM and WSJ iOS and Android apps, and lead a team to create and implement a holistic vision for our members’ on platform experience
Demonstrate thought leadership on how we can create products that stay true to the core of our brand as a top trusted news source, but marry evolutions in technology and UX to offer up the best news membership experience possible.
Lead a cross-functional team in solving problems within the OKR framework across apps and web. Set clear objectives and associated key results, tied to company wide strategies and vision. Must have comfort working in quarterly increments, complete with looking back on previous quarter, and using results to recast the next quarter’s plan. Insist upon and articulate clear baseline and target setting for key results, as well as transparency around their reporting and communication.
Own the short- and long-term roadmaps for native apps and web, complete with articulated and socialized mission and vision statements.
Develop deep and impactful relationships with stakeholders on both the Editorial and Commercial side, and earn their respect and confidence with regard to not just execution, but also in terms of subject matter expertise and ability to set high level vision for our apps and web experience
Pick and choose how and when to create a unique experience for apps versus web. Must have a clear and ever curious perspective on the nuances between both platforms and how to best extract value from both.
Have strong relationships with both Apple and Google representatives across product, business and editorial, in order to prepare for and take advantage of strategic opportunities for partnership and product evolution.
Communicate regularly with stakeholders to keep all teams informed on high level vision and performance across products. This should go way beyond tactics and represent broader vision, tied to impact to the bottom line.
Be the point of contact to initiate big new on platform membership projects.
Know your members. Represent the definitive voice for the user as we look to improve the on platform experience, by spearheading user testing initiatives and frequent touch points with Customer Service, and regular competitive analysis
Perform vendor analysis and recommend integrations where it makes sense, always with a keen, logical and dispassionate view on build versus buy scenarios.
Manage a team including project and product leads in shepherding mobile and web teams. Explore synergies between teams, as we look to break down walls and collaborate on a best in class membership experience on platform.
Work in agile scrum framework including sprints, sprint reviews, sprint planning, retrospectives and grooming sessions. Architect the process that works for the team, and lead team to adhere to it faithfully.
Be the primary resource for best practices, industry trends and competitive landscape in mobile and web
Be fearless in launching, experimenting, and shuttering products when they have not met their targets
Shepherd big on platform projects and be the accountable person from Discovery all the way through Launch and Go to Market. Ensure successful launch of all on platform projects.
8-10 years leading a product or set of products, ideally for a media organization
Someone with the gravitas to speak to on platform vision for WSJ. Years of experience crafting and presenting visions, elevator pitches and a track record for persuading tough audiences to move forward in new directions.
Big love for WSJ. This individual will be a news junkie, a fan of creative ways of telling stories in digital.
Experience leading teams, both large and small, in building great products. Know when to step in and when to give the team room to grow, evolve and test aN idea.
Strongly preferred that you have worked with a newsroom, and developed a solid partnership with them in developing products for demanding members
Years of experience working through the differences in web, iOS versus Android OS and how to get the best out of all, and when the experiences should diverge and converge
