Who we are and what we do?
The Membership Subscription team is responsible for growing our subscriber base of individually paying members globally, across WSJ, Barron’s, and MarketWatch. Our team manages the end-to-end subscription levers across acquisition, engagement, and retention. The team is also supported by data science and analytics, and paid media teams. We also work closely with customer service, product, technology, finance, legal, and operations teams.
MarketWatch launched their subscription business in October 2020 and is therefore in the early phases of maturity, but with over 45m uniques a month presents a big opportunity to drive growth. The Barron’s subscription business has and continues to grow rapidly, and therefore the role across both brands demands a growth-led mindset. The VP Barron’s Group Subscriptions is responsible for growing the individually paid subscriber base of Barron’s and MarketWatch, and the associated revenue goals. The role carries the accountability of hitting the goals and will work closely with teams within membership (acquisition, CRM, and data) but will also be responsible for working with the functional experts across product, marketing, customer insight, and the editorial team. The role is a “builder” role and therefore breadth of experience building subscription businesses and working in a matrix role are favorable.
What are my accountabilities?
Accountable for growing the volume and revenue lines of both MarketWatch and Barron’s.
Work closely with the functional experts who are accountable for acquisition, engagement, and retention
Partner heavily with finance and Barron’s Group product, marketing, insight, and editorial leads, and Barron’s Group GM.
Recognize opportunities to grow that might require investment/business casing
Work closely with data and insight to find opportunities that will accelerate subscriber and revenue growth
Champion who the customer is and how we use customer insight to grow
What do you need from me?
8-10 years of experience, working in media or publishing is a plus
The position requires a growth led mindset
Previous experience in growing subscriptions either inside or outside of publishing is favorable
Experience of working within, influencing within, and or networking within a matrix environment
Strong influencing skills
Broad knowledge and breadth of experience in “building roles” will be favored over vertical expertise (acquisition, engagement etc)
The candidate must be data literate and be comfortble using data to make decisions
The ability to see the “big picture” turning individual tactics into programs of work, and understanding the implications of a change in one area and consequences it might have in others
To be comfortable working with a diverse set of stakeholders
To be comfortable not running a team, but heavily influencing the outcome
Ability to look ahead, understanding how customer trends might impact the business and what we should do as a result
