Dow Jones Senior Manager, Finance in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Senior Manager, Finance to support the daily business and financial needs of The Wall Street Journal newsroom. The candidate will assist the Assistant Managing Editor, Business Management with the execution of financial matters related to new initiatives, hiring and the proper stewardship of our funds, overseeing all operating and capital expenses for the newsroom.

You will manage a team of two and work with newsroom editors and leaders around the globe to help shape the future Journal. You will assist on all budgeting preparation, forecasting and analysis of the newsroom spend, working cooperatively with our business partner on the finance team of Dow Jones & Co., our parent company, and provide monthly reporting and analysis. You will take ownership of contract negotiations and provide cost-management solutions. In addition, you will provide assistance on headcount and compensation planning and tracking, and you will manage a team that oversees the non-compensation part of the operating budget, including vendor and freelance contracts, onboarding and payments. The qualified candidate will be responsible for the accurate and timely application of customer payments. You will be expected to take a leadership role in partnership with our Dow Jones sourcing and accounts payable team.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Newsroom Business Management & Finance of The Wall Street Journal. While you may be asked to start remotely, the job will eventually be based in our New York office.

You Will:

  • Be responsible for The Wall Street Journal newsroom’s part of budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis in close partnership with the Dow Jones corporate finance team

  • Provide day-to-day cost-management solutions to ensure plans, budgets and schedules are adhered to

  • Provide monthly results to senior Journal news management

  • Oversee monthly reporting that is provided at the cost-center owner level

  • Partner with Dow Jones Finance, People, Marketing and Legal departments on the newsroom’s behalf on finance and operational matters

  • Provide solutions based on data from financial and trend analysis

  • Provide assistance on the compensation-planning process for the global newsroom (merit, union, pay equity, market and promotion adjustments)

  • Work with the Dow Jones People team to manage the timing and financial impact of contingent workers

  • Manage a team of two, overseeing performance management and their professional development

  • Process invoices, create purchase orders and onboard new vendors and freelancers. Ensure that all vendors and freelancers have signed contracts

  • Manage monthly accruals and reclasses when needed for assigned cost centers

  • Additional ad-hoc requests as deemed necessary by the business or financial needs

You Have:

  • Experience communicating and providing guidance to senior management

  • Excellent proficiency with standard financial tools needed to produce analyses for optimizing news resources and assisting with our decision-making

  • Knowledge of accounting principles and journals required

  • High degree of proficiency in PC skills including experience with financial applications and reporting tools, specifically Microsoft excel (can perform complex functions) and Google Docs

  • SAP financial system experience strongly preferred

  • Experience with contract negotiations

  • The ability to excel in both independent and collaborative work environments

  • Planning and organizational skills including effective time management

  • The ability to see challenges early and be solutions oriented

  • The ability to define problems, collect data and draw valid conclusions

  • Exceptional analytical skills. Strong eye for detail and detail oriented work practices.

  • The ability to handle a range of tasks at the same time, and to be able to thrive under pressure

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance or accounting. Having or working towards a professional accounting qualification or master’s degree (UK relevant qualifications ACCA or CIMA) is also preferred

  • 6+ years of experience in a financial role; leadership experience required
