Job Information

Dow Jones Reporter in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

Reporter

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced and determined reporter to join our autos team, covering Tesla and its leader, Elon Musk.

The world’s most valuable automaker has entered a turbulent stretch, with competitors both in the U.S. and China angling for its crown in the electric-car market and investors antsy about its growth prospects. All this upheaval is prime for scoops and rich storytelling. We’re looking for a reporter who can get inside this company and illuminate developments from within and at the top. This person will work closely with other WSJ journalists writing about Musk and his companies, as well as auto team members in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

This is an intense and fast-paced beat. The ideal candidate will be curious and tenacious, and comfortable alternating between breaking news and longer-term enterprise. A demonstrated track record of delivering scoops is a must, as is the ability to turn around clean and accurate copy under tight deadlines.

Candidates should have experience in business or financial reporting and high interest in corporate coverage. Knowledge of automotive or tech is preferred but not necessary.

This position reports to the WSJ Autos Editor. Ideally, it will be based in Austin, New York or San Francisco.

You will:

  • Develop sources to break news and write authoritatively about your beat

  • Unearth distinct and impactful enterprise

  • Mine data and public documents for stories that might be hiding in plain sight

  • Collaborate with colleagues in different parts of the newsroom to elevate and broaden our coverage

You have:

  • At least three years of reporting experience

  • A proven track record dominating a competitive beat

  • The ability to report and write clearly under deadline pressure

  • Experience tackling ambitious projects and balancing the various demands of a fast-paced newsroom

  • A desire to experiment with different storytelling formats, including visuals, video and podcasts

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter detailing how you would do the job, and five examples of your best work annotating why you are proud of the pieces.
