Job Information

Dow Jones Product Manager, WSJ in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

About the Opinion Section:

The Wall Street Journal’s news pages are committed to informing our readers, and our editorials are dedicated to advocating a consistent philosophy and positions that emanate from it. That philosophy can be summed up as ‘free markets, free people.’

We believe that the ultimate function of opinion journalism is the same as the rest of the newspaper, to inform. But in opinion journalism we have the additional purpose of making an argument for a point of view. We often take sides on the major issues of politics and society, with a goal of moving policies or events in what we think is the best direction for the country and world. In stating our own views forcefully, we hope to raise and sharpen the level of debate and knowledge. And we hope that our editorials reflect not merely the passing whim of passing editors, but a body of thought shaped by a century of tradition.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop an expert understanding of our current and prospective consumers

  • Understand the nuances behind different types of news content and define how they should be communicated to consumers.

  • Champion the user experience while delivering key business outcomes

  • Work cross-functionally across Design, Research, Engineering, Experimentation, the newsroom, and business stakeholders to define and prioritize business and newsroom requirements for WSJ.com’s Opinion and Style sections, driving user engagement as well as subscriptions and advertising revenue

  • Work with the Sr. Director of Product to define the product vision and roadmap that achieves product strategy and business outcomes for the Opinion and Style content sections

  • Proactively manage and prioritize a backlog

  • Write clear, concise requirements and user stories which clearly and unambiguously communicate acceptance criteria (i.e. what success looks like) and work closely with software developer throughout the product life cycle

  • Coordinate communication between developers, designers, and business stakeholders regarding goals, requirements, and growth expectations

  • Define success criteria and measure Key Performance Indicators to demonstrate ROI and P&L impact of product enhancements

  • Work with research teams to gather and analyze audience research and feedback regarding new products and enhancements

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • 1-2 years of product management experience with consumer facing products.

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about mobile, digital media and news.

  • Decisive with a bias towards action; must thrive in fast-paced, agile environments

  • Ability to accurately handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong analytical skills, including knowledge of Adobe analytics platform and/or others

  • Ability to effectively present and explain results with quantitative information

  • Experience analyzing qualitative and quantitative consumer research.

  • Experience defining and implementing product requirements for mobile apps.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across the full spectrum of internal stakeholders and customers.

  • Experience working closely with engineering and design teams.
