Job Information

Dow Jones Product Designer in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

Role Description

(Open to remote working)

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Product Designer to join the WSJ Product Design team with a focus on Experimentation and testing. The role is highly collaborative and will specifically involve working with the Experimentation team in the DXS (Digital Experience and Strategy) unit.

Our ideal candidate will have experience working with digital subscription products, and a comprehensive understanding of user journeys, interaction and engagement. Experience working within news media or digital publication is a bonus, but not essential.

In this role, you will be responsible for designing, prioritizing and executing digital experimentation across WSJ to incrementally increase the rate at which we acquire, engage, and retain our members. With our partners across the organization, you will design variations for digital experiences informed by extensive research, prior tests, and instinct. These digital experiments are constructed working through design, metrics, scheduling, and technical solutions. Digital experimentation injects an unfiltered customer feedback loop directly into our product roadmaps, helping businesses develop the most valuable, sticky, meaningful product to our customers.

This role will also involve researching best-in-class competitive experiences to inform new experiment ideas while helping non-design-related strategic ideas visually come to life as digital experiments. You will also ensure the designs are aligned to our brand’s overarching design language and systems.

  • Design and deliver product specifications for new features and experiments in the department

  • Take the lead in framing and solving hard problems; has driven innovative efforts that uncovered new value with new kinds of experiences

  • Work with other members of the product design team to maintain consistent interface patterns across WSJ products and experiences.

  • Outputs include: Interface Mockups, Design Presentations, Figma/Sketch Files, Clickable Prototypes

  • Advocate and evolve design’s role within the organization and its product development and experimentation processes

  • 3+ years experience in Product/UX Design

  • Prior experience with experimentation-driven product development preferred but not mandatory, this includes A/B multivariate testing and growth design

  • A collaborative and inclusive approach that can work in harmony with the many different teams and stakeholders

  • Ability to present and articulate ideas with confidence and clarity

  • Focus and instinctive prioritization for delivering maximum value.

  • Strong knowledge of typography, information hierarchy, color and layout

  • Skilled with Figma, Sketch, InVision, Adobe CC and other industry standard tools

  • Organized and diligent with all work and documentation

Design at WSJ

We know that the best candidates are not always the obvious ones. Rather than sticking to a rigid criteria, we search for exceptional candidates with the following in mind:

While most of our roles have specific requirements, we don't have an exact person in mind. Even if candidates don't tick every box on paper, it doesn't mean they couldn't be a great fit. Our criteria are never rigid, and we evaluate each candidate on individual merit.

Our process is never automated and we take the time to review every application we receive. This usually entails reading the CV and reviewing each candidate's portfolio or website in detail before making any decisions.

Attentive to Detail

It goes without saying that an attention to detail matters. This isn't just the work in a portfolio, but everything we have to evaluate an application, including the CV, cover letter and how the work is presented. We consider these details just as much as the work itself.

Diverse in Background

People's backgrounds and careers are rarely linear or meet exact criteria. We're always on the lookout for people with different backgrounds, skill sets, and experiences and we often see these as an advantage.

People, Not Portfolios

Quality of work and tangible skills are important, but we consider more than that. Day-to-day we work with people, not their portfolios. Specific skills can be developed with a willingness to learn, but the right team dynamic is just as important.

Always Inclusive

Diversity and inclusiveness is one of the key factors in the success of our team. We actively encourage anyone who believes they are a good fit to apply.
