The Wall Street Journal is seeking a full-stack engineer with a focus on web development. As part of a cross-functional agile software team, you will design and implement new features that are part of newsroom experiments and new initiatives. The ability to work on a quick, nimble team is essential.
This engineering role is in the Journal’s Innovation Department, a new department that co-leads experiments with leaders across the newsroom. The department is part of the Strategy unit, which is an incubator for new technologies, audience growth, community and news innovation. The team includes half a dozen new major initiatives that will be led by a full range of journalistic talent -- writers, video journalists, graphics designers, editors, product managers, engineers, designers, data scientists, artificial intelligence experts and more -- in a lively, collaborative project to discover new offerings of journalistic value.
The software engineer is an essential partner throughout these new initiatives. This person will work closely with newsroom leadership as well as the Journal’s product, design and engineering departments. There is room in these roles to develop both journalism skills and engineering skills, and career paths from these jobs can lead in multiple directions.
In this role, you would lead and participate in technical discussions about technology and infrastructure, as well as consider the pros and cons of a technology choice based on business value, scalability, maintainability and project delivery performance. You would maintain and share knowledge in emerging technologies and tools in the industry. And you should be excited to take on a variety of projects throughout the course of the year.
It’s essential to have an enthusiasm for news and the public mission of journalism in these jobs. The Journal is the most trusted news outlet in the country, and it is expanding its appeal among new audiences.
