The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Newsletters and Alerts Product Lead. Newsletters and Alerts represent one of the biggest drivers of traffic and retention across our products, providing value on their own as standalone products or as gateways into the broader WSJ ecosystem, including WSJ.com and our native apps. The Product Lead will be part of the WSJ PDE team (Product, Design and Engineering) in the Newsroom and will work closely with our journalists to devise strategy for WSJ newsletters and alerts. The product lead will work with designers, UX and engineers on the design, build and launch of new newsletters and features for existing ones.
Drive product vision for Newsletters at WSJ, leveraging what is unique about the newsletters member base and associated platform solutions.
Partner with the Senior Newsletter Editor to define objectives and key results (OKRs) for Newsletters, tied to broader WSJ product objectives, and employ them in coming up with a rolling 3 month roadmap, and longer term prioritized backlog.
Help inform the Senior Newsletter Editor’s recommendations to newsroom leaders about rationalizing newsletters and the creation of news ones.
Shape and drive awareness around newsletters metrics: what they mean and how they surface performance against our baselines. This should include engagement and performance/stability oriented key results as well as revenue oriented ones.
Along with the Senior Newsletter Editor, foster appreciation for and increase visibility of newsletters in the company at large. Get colleagues to beta test. Educate the rest of the organization towards realizing what a massive opportunity they represent.
Harness and strengthen the relationship with the broader stakeholder group including: advertising, marketing, membership, customer service, analytics, etc. in efforts to come up with more customer focused, easier to monetize products with a smoother path to market.
Partner with other members of the product team and broader PDE group (Product, Design, and Engineering) in devising products that promote newsletters effectively and work seamlessly from both a functional and brand perspective across platforms and devices.
Develop expertise around all forms of email and newsletters used to reach out customers, and get a holistic view of the channel from a product opportunity and communication perspective.
Communicate with stakeholders to keep all teams informed on product releases, performance metrics, future rollouts and activity with Newsletters.
Create discovery presentations to get core and broader team buy in with regard to OKRs around epics and projects. Author requirements and gather user feedback. Write user stories and product requirements documents.
Develop the product within the Agile Scrum framework: including sprints, sprint reviews, sprint planning, retrospectives and planning sessions. Team with the project manager and engineering leads to architect a process that works for the team, is adhered to, but leaves room for continued evolution.
Be a resource for the organization as far as best practices, industry trends and competitive landscape when it comes to all things newsletters.
Use A/B testing tools to optimize performance and revenue opportunities
Spearhead migration of newsletters from older ESPs to new platform.
Work closely with engagement and membership teams to increase subscriptions to newsletters and WSJ.
Subject matter expert on your products, best practices, competition and latest industry trends and regularly track product success metrics.
Evaluate pros and cons of different choices and understand tradeoffs between scope and time to market.
Be able to work efficiently in a constantly changing and growing environment where the process is fluid and creative where unique solutions are desired.
3-5 years of experience as a Product Lead, ideally messaging or newsletter focused
A real passion for building great newsletter products -- particularly media focused
Deep knowledge of newsletter platforms like Campaign Monitor, and experience building new products on it
Experience working in media, with editors in a newsroom preferred
Strong leadership skills and experience leading in a matrixed organization a must
Experience working in Agile scrum-based frameworks, with iterative releases
Strong presentation skills, and facility building strong arguments when getting buy in from teams across the organization
Experience working in a metrics-drive-product organization, ideally with OKRs (Objectives and Key Results), and with setting high level objectives set against associated key results
Proven track record in launching products and seeing them from Discovery, Testing, Prototyping, Design, Build, QA, all the way through Go to Market.
Demonstrated leadership with cross-functional teams, and the ability to gain cooperation from others at all levels.
Strong sense of urgency and comfort in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
