Managing Photo Editor, DC News

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Managing Photo Editor to join the senior leadership team of the Photo department. The Managing Photo Editor will work with the Photo Director and Deputies to oversee the work of our team, primarily leading our Politics, Legal and National Security coverage. You will be actively photo editing, as well as managing a small team of news photo editors in photographic assigning, research and story production.

Our content requires bold digital display on mobile and desktop platforms, and a thoughtful approach to print requirements. The Managing Photo Editor will be responsible for maintaining a strong and dynamic quality of photography and photo-illustration. You will facilitate innovative visual approaches to the creation and surfacing of our online content. You will attend weekly bureau and art meetings and will work closely with a team of editors, coverage chiefs, publishing and print editors, platform leads, section art directors, graphics, video and audience colleagues on daily and enterprise coverage.

This position ideally will be based in New York, but we are open to candidates in Washington D.C. It will report to the Deputy Director of Photography.

You will:

  • Direct and produce breaking news, daily news and enterprise articles, collaborating with newsroom editors, visual colleagues, SEO and platform teams, as well as Bureau and section chiefs and your department manager.

  • Collaborate with the Director and Deputies of the department on breaking news coverage and events, as well as cross-coverage area initiatives and projects.

  • Produce visually-led stories in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic and other needs as stories develop.

  • Work in our CMS to combine different formats, newsroom tools and visual elements.

  • Work with the editing desk, platform and off-platform editors to execute and surface the work strategically across all platforms.

  • Drive excellence in assigning and research for our news, narrative, investigative, feature and enterprise coverage for all platforms.

  • Assign photographers to stories - produce the shoots (including security, travel, visa, releases, budget) and brief the photographer.

  • Promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism.

  • Mentor your reports on editing, news judgment, prioritization and deadlines.

  • Work with your reports and across teams to pitch and create innovative visual and multimedia approaches to our storytelling.

  • Drive long term priorities, planning and innovation for the coverage area.

  • Partner with Photo leadership on broader training and mentoring for the team.

  • Negotiate budgets with photographers and photography archives/individuals.

  • Approve photographer assignments for non-standard day rates, or larger projects undertaken by the team.

  • Work with department leadership on the data and analytics for your team’s output, enabling us to guide coverage decisions and to monitor the success of our work.

  • Be responsible for monthly and annual budget goals.

  • Manage team scheduling with Photo Dir. of Operations, including vacation and comp time.

  • Manage overtime assigning and approval for your reports.

  • Conduct performance reviews of your team.

You have:

  • An enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgment and ethics.

  • Familiarity with audience data tools and strategies for encouraging readers to engage with digital content.

  • Proven organizational, communication, leadership and cross-team collaborative abilities.

  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.

  • Strong experience prioritizing best opportunities for visual stories using judgment based on newsroom and departmental strategy and resources.

  • Deep knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.

  • Thorough working knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools.

  • Experience with news gathering, satellite and research tools.

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a newsroom, including ideally at least two years in a leadership role.
