The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced news photo editor to join our team in New York. The National Photo Editor will help drive photographic coverage as part of a team of fast-paced photo editors on our U.S. News desk. You will report to the Deputy Director of Photography and will work closely with the U.S. Coverage Chief and deputies, along with graphics colleagues on the desk. You will direct breaking news photography coverage and take a lead role in pitching and creating visual and multimedia enterprise stories. You will also work closely with the D.C. bureau on politics coverage across platforms.
The position requires great range, editorial judgment and journalistic integrity; an editor who is able to produce complex photo assignments, perform strong agency and social media research, and work quickly and effectively in a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world. We're looking for someone with at least 4 years experience in a senior photo editing role.
Lead a small desk photo team, producing and building visual assets for news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop.
Maintain a very high level of photography assigning working on news, narrative, investigative, feature and enterprise stories for all platforms including mobile and print.
Demonstrate the ability to edit, pace and build a powerful visual story, incorporating multimedia and other elements for long-form journalism, also usage of innovative storytelling tools.
Focus on working with a diverse range of subjects and photographers, keeping new and young audiences in mind. Work to strengthen relationships with the photographers you are directing through briefings and regular contact.
Demonstrate great editorial judgment, working with Journal Editors and legal department for all vetting, copyright and ethics questions.
Work with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual story opportunities. Train reporters and editors on new skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling.
Pitch and develop visual stories. Review visual pitches and ideas
Work closely with supervisor and broader department to assign stories.
Shape new workflows and processes in a global and cross-platform newsroom.
Collaborate with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content
Run and maintain a monthly budget within the department for assigning. Participate in quarterly check-ins to stay within a designated annual budget.
Schedule and run effective meetings in person or remotely.
4+ years experience in a newsroom.
An enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgment and ethics.
Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities
Proven deep research skills
Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
Experience with news gathering and research tools including Storyful, Factiva, Google Earth and DigitalGlobe
Good knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.
The initiative to take on and learn new tasks
Basic coding skills a plus
