Dow Jones Lead Photo Editor, Finance in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced digital news photo editor to run photographic coverage for our Financial Markets and Investments desk.

As Lead Finance Photo Editor, you will direct breaking news coverage, make decisions and recommendations related to other coverage priorities and Enterprise assignments, oversee desk planning and annual budget and take a lead role in pitching and creating visual and multimedia stories.

There is frequent opportunity for conceptual illustration and photo-illustration on this beat. You should have a keen interest in how to assign visuals for Financial coverage. Great range, editorial judgment and journalist integrity are essential.

You should be a digitally-forward editor who is able to produce complex photo assignments, create or assign conceptual and illustrative work, perform strong agency and social media research, and work quickly and effectively within a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world.

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and fast-paced team of photo editors and work with colleagues throughout the newsroom. You will report to the Deputy Director of Photography, Business and you will work closely with the Finance Coverage Chief, deputies, bureaus and reporters, along with fellow photo editors and visuals colleagues.

The role may start remotely, but will ultimately be based in our New York office.

You will:

  • Lead a small desk photo team, producing and building visual assets for our digital Financial news and enterprise content, in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop.

  • Drive excellence in assigning and research for our news, narrative, investigative, feature and enterprise coverage for all platforms.

  • Oversee a Live Markets Vertical with photo and graphics display.

  • Coordinate closely with the Business Deputy and broader team of photo editors, communicating the daily content and any staffing coverage needs.

  • Demonstrate the ability to edit, pace and build a powerful visual story, incorporating multimedia and other elements for longform journalism and for innovative storytelling tools.

  • Pitch and develop visual stories. Also work with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.

  • Focus on working with a diverse range of subjects and photographers, keeping new and young audiences in mind.

  • Show great editorial judgment, working with Journal editors and the legal department in the case of vetting, copyright and ethics questions.

  • Collaborate with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content.

  • Schedule and run regular meetings with photo and visual colleagues and reporters, also working closely with the London and Hong Kong bureaus and our London-based International Photo Editor.

  • Maintain a monthly budget within the department for assigning.

You have:

  • A minimum of 4 years experience in a newsroom, with at least 2 years experience in a senior photo editing role.

  • An enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgment and ethics.

  • Interest in financial journalism and how we can reach both insiders and broader readership.

  • Strong organizational, communication, leadership and collaborative abilities

  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to prioritize best opportunities for visual stories using judgment based on newsroom and departmental strategy and resources.

  • Proven deep research skills

  • The initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.

  • Good knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.

  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools. Experience with news gathering, Satellite and research tools.

  • Basic coding, video editing, and photo illustration skills are a plus.
