Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced photo editor to join its team in New York. This is a temporary one-year contract position.

What the position is:

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and fast-paced team of photo editors and to work on The Wall Street Journal’s The Future Of Everything - a multimedia franchise looking at the next waves of technology, science, and management and how they are redefining the way we work and play. Our editorial team will publish stories across all of our platforms with a deep focus on visual and experimental storytelling. Platforms include a monthly newspaper section, a dedicated digital edition, a weekly newsletter, and contributions that tie in with high-profile live events.

Who we are looking for:

A photo editor with range and journalistic integrity, who is able to produce complex photography assignments - from contemporary portraiture to reportage to conceptual still-life - perform strong agency and social media research, and work effectively within a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world. They must be able to work quickly and accurately on features and enterprise stories, collaborating with the newsroom’s editors and section chiefs. A qualified candidate has at least 3-5 years experience in a photo editing role.

Skills needed:

  • A background in editorial production work as well as reportage assigning

  • A self-starter who can work independently as well as with a team

  • Strong portraiture conceptualization and assigning

  • Proven deep research skills, including newsgathering and social media tools.

  • Familiarity with web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP.

  • Good knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.

  • Basic coding skills a plus

  • Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities

Daily tasks:

  • Produce and build visual assets for feature stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom, anticipating photographic needs as stories develop.

  • Photography assigning: Commission original content, working with photographers, editors and reporters to tell narrative, feature and enterprise stories on all platforms including mobile and print.

  • Pitch visually innovative and original approaches to stories, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.

  • Collaborate with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content.

  • Maintain a budget on a monthly basis.
