Job Description:

About the Role

The Wall Street Journal’s Opinion section is looking for a digital designer and visual editor to join our visuals team in New York as a Digital Graphics Editor. This is an opportunity for someone with a creative vision to collaborate closely with some of the best Opinion writers and editors in the world to create information graphics and data visualizations for our print and digital platforms. The Digital Graphics Editor will focus on graphics and interactives that cover politics and economics, and also have opportunities to work on stories and explainers in other areas, including book and arts reviews.

About the Opinion Section

Following the American newspaper practice, the heads of News and Editorial report independently to the publisher of the Journal and CEO of Dow Jones, William Lewis. The Editorial staff oversees the Opinion content published on WSJ.com, the editorial and op-ed pages of The Wall Street Journal in print, and criticism of books and the arts, which are recognized at the Journal as an Opinion function.

While The Wall Street Journal’s news pages are committed to informing our readers, our editorials are dedicated to advocating a consistent philosophy and positions that emanate from it. That philosophy can be summed up as ‘free markets, free people.’

We believe that the ultimate function of opinion journalism is the same as the rest of the newspaper, to inform. But in opinion journalism we have the additional purpose of making an argument for a point of view. We often take sides on the major issues of politics and society, with a goal of moving policies or events in what we think is the best direction for the country and world. In stating our own views forcefully, we hope to raise and sharpen the level of debate and knowledge. And we hope that our editorials reflect not merely the passing whim of passing editors, but a body of thought shaped by a century of tradition.

You Will:

  • Collaborate with writers, editors and visuals team to create new ideas.

  • Create concepts for new approaches to visual storytelling and opinion analysis of news events.

  • Create graphics and interactives for print and digital platforms.

  • Create graphics and interactives for both breaking news and longer-term projects.

  • Contribute to other visual stories, including custom videos, which are created in the department.

  • Attend editorial board meetings.

You Have:

  • 3+ years of experience in a newsroom, with excellent news, data and design judgment.

  • A creative vision and an eagerness to collaborate on new ideas.

  • Editing and visual journalism skills with at least one or two specialties that might include design, coding, cartography, animation or data visualization.

  • Editorial skills to best frame opinion content and analysis in visual form.

  • Experience with and interest in business/economic news.

  • Experience with and interest in political news coverage, especially polling and voter data

  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and its libraries, especially D3.

  • An interest in data journalism and associated tools, such as Excel, SQL, R and Python.

  • Knowledge of responsive design and best practices for designing stories for mobile devices.

  • Work quickly, efficiently and flexibly under tight deadlines.

  • Help reporters and editors learn new skills to contribute to their visual storytelling.

  • Experience with print design/layout and photo editing a plus
