The Wall Street Journal is seeking a data scientist to help shape the journalistic mission of its Media Science Lab, a team that supports the newsroom with experimentation and research. This person is responsible for establishing best practices for data analysis and computational journalism, and disseminating the methods to the rest of the Journal newsroom.
Work with R&D Chief to develop data science strategy for the newsroom, create pipeline of data-driven stories and scalable news experiences.
Proactively identify opportunities for collaboration with editorial teams and conduct research to support other groups in the development of new forms of storytelling and computational journalism.
Work with newsroom leaders to identify how to support key personnel from other desks, departments or bureaus to collaboratively work on specific data science projects.
Partner with colleagues from around the organization to identify and complete projects within the Lab.
Preserve and uphold WSJ voice and ethical standards in Lab projects and collaborations.
Keep a finger on the pulse of global storytelling trends, technologies and platforms, continuously identifying and evaluating the usefulness of these developments to WSJ audiences.
Document projects, write case studies and develop best practices to share knowledge inside and outside the newsroom.
Help identify data science methods, technologies or tools worth exploring for WSJ audiences. Determine the processes and techniques by which we could use them.
Help create a program to educate newsroom stakeholders about data science and data-driven storytelling.
Inspire the Lab team and our other journalists to produce their best work on all platforms.
Contribute by attitude, example and encouragement to a culture of creativity, enthusiasm, motivation, ownership and professionalism.
Contribute to the shaping and management of staff-development programs.
Identify high-potential members of the team and ensure they are effectively developed.
Uphold high editorial standards within the Lab.
Experience applying computational methods to journalism.
Excellent news judgment and strong editing skills.
Collaborative spirit and ability to lead within environment where resources are shared with other teams.
Knowledge of R and Python (Pandas and Scikit-Learn) Experience with machine learning and natural language processing using open source libraries including TensorFlow,Scikit Learn, SpaCy, NLTK is preferred.
Familiarity with natural language generation and template writing.
Respected newsroom leader who inspires other journalists to produce their best work.
Deep understanding of digital media and digital journalism.
Excellent interpersonal skills, communication and workshop facilitation experience.
