Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal is looking for a data analyst to help deliver critical data-driven insights and visualizations of them for the newsroom. These insights will be presented to news chiefs, senior editors, journalists and executives, and will help guide strategy across content areas and multiple ongoing projects. Through this work, you will also contribute meaningfully to the creation of new dashboards and metrics for WSJ newsroom teams.
The Journal has a large digital audience that is quickly growing. As we grow, we are dedicated to understanding all of our audiences and the value we provide them. You will be part of the Newsroom Data team, which is using data science, analytics, and predictive modeling to help us engage better with our audiences. Key to that mission is our work with data and teams across the newsroom, including video, podcast, search, social, product, and strategy.
It’s important to have an enthusiasm for news and the public mission of journalism in this job. The Journal is the most trusted news outlet in the country, and we have made great strides in recent years in integrating audience insights into the newsroom.
You will:
Manage, organize and present data in a clear, concise and actionable format
Turn raw data into visual insights to help support newsroom decisions
Teach editors, reporters and others around the newsroom how to use tools and think about audience data
Help create clear and useful dashboards, preferably with Google Data Studio
You have:
Ideally 1-2 years of experience but we're open to less professional experience depending on skills and relevant project work
The ability to be flexible with your workflow and manage multiple assignments
Experience cleaning and manipulating messy data
Proficiency in SQL
Excellent time management skills, eagerness to learn and a desire to seek and give feedback
Top candidates will have strengths in one or more areas of the following:
Knowledge of Python (preferred) or R
Experience with Google data studio
Experience with Linux and cloud-based services
Knowledge of data analytics platforms, including Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics, Parse.ly or Chartbeat
While you may start working remotely, this job will eventually be based in New York City. You will report to the Director of Data Science.
To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining how your background, skills and interests align with the requirements of the job.
