About the Role
The Senior Manager, Digital Risk enables exceptional journalism and sound business practices by preventing digital risks from inhibiting the work of Dow Jones’ newsrooms and its executives.
Digital risks exist where threats in the digital world make journalists, their communities and their sources vulnerable to physical impacts. They also have the potential to negatively impact the integrity of the output of newsrooms. Many of the same digital risks faced by our newsrooms are also faced by Dow Jones’ executives.
The Senior Manager, Digital Risk, a key member of the Risk & Resilience team, is deeply invested in our journalism by being integrated with our newsrooms, as well as with our executive teams. Reporting to the Global Head of Risk & Resilience, they take ownership of identifying digital risks and driving appropriate mitigations, equipping journalists and executives with the specialized tools, knowledge and skills to navigate those risks when undertaking their editorial and business activities.

You Will
Take ownership over identifying digital risks faced by the newsrooms and our executives, and drive appropriate mitigations.
Engage a broad range of customers, partners and other stakeholders to ensure that goals and practical workplace efforts to manage digital risk align with editorial and business objectives. This involves the ongoing application of advising and internal consulting either in response to requests for support or proactively as specific issues/threats are identified.
Obtain, curate and analyze digital risk intelligence; using it to inform editorial activities, and executive strategies and operational plans.
Develop digital risk mitigation and management training packages and deliver them to newsroom and executive teams.
Create, implement and maintain digital risk policies, procedures, guidelines, standards and best practices and evaluate enterprise-wide effectiveness and adherence.
Identify, onboard and implement tools to tackle digital risk; by digital and cyber experts and newsrooms and executives.
Provide digital-risk input to the assessment of editorial activities, and act as the digital risk subject matter expert during responses to incidents.
Attend professional events and courses, and partake in working groups with digital risk partners at fellow media organizations in order to stay abreast of new technologies and changes in the digital risk landscape.
You have
An understanding of the editorial activities of newsrooms, the environments in which they operate and the digital risks they face when reporting or on an ongoing basis.
Proven communications technology experience, an understanding of how communications are surveilled and knowledge of best practices when it comes to securing communications.
An interest in global events and a good understanding of how social, political, environmental, economic and conflict dynamics can affect digital risk.
The ability to balance theoretical security ideals with the practicalities and realities of editorial and executive activities, in order to achieve the best possible digital risk mitigations.
Critical thinking skills. Able to understand complex situations and provide unique solutions with appropriate levels of detail.
Passion for solving complex problems, and building scalable processes.
A collegial, dynamic and proactive approach with a desire for continuous learning, development and career growth.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills - you must be able to brief and influence effectively and translate complex technical concepts into understandable terms. Careful information sharing is critical as is tailoring your communications style for various audiences.
A demonstrable ability to plan in a clear and structured manner, set objectives and milestones and deliver impactful results.
Preferred Qualities
Personal experience of operating in digitally hostile environments, such as countries with aggressive digital surveillance regimes.
Experience of having worked in or with cyber security teams as this will help you to demonstrate the desired understanding of technology required for the role. While this role is not a traditional cyber security role, it does share some crossover with the activities and objectives of a traditional cyber security function.
