Dow Jones Metadata Manager in LONDON, United Kingdom

Job Description:

Role

The Manager, Metadata reports to the Director, Metadata Management. The individual will be part of Strategic Services’ Metadata Management team.

The Manager is responsible for the maintenance, development and promotion of Dow Jones Intelligent Identifiers (DJID), the maintenance and development of the organisation code universe and will oversee a team of one Metadata Specialist based in London. Working under the direction of theDirector, the Manager establishes key metrics and manages and tracks the team’s progress against performance targets, prioritizing work and balancing resources.

The Manager implements strategies designed to enhance the use of metadata throughout the company, both internally and externally. The team seeks to both maximise the potential of existing metadata and to identify new and emerging opportunities in this field. This involves working with members of the Strategic Services team, such as Quality, Content Strategists and Solutions, as well as other functional areas within Data Strategy, Product, and Technology.

Recently, new internal use cases include DJID Thematic Targeting, which has resulted in $1.68MM in booked Revenue for FY19 with 58 line items sold into FY19. The heart of Dow Jones's metadata rests with the Metadata Manager. The Manager is part of a dedicated, two-person team, which makes backfilling the role critical.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop DJID’s subject, region and industry taxonomies.

  • Promote DJID internally and externally.

  • Maintain and develop an organization's authority file.

  • Maintain and develop existing metadata types which may include the following: currencies, indices, currency pairs, economic indicators.

  • Create and maintain mappings between different metadata sets.

  • Run tests in order to determine the effects of any changes to metadata application, creation or storage.

  • Retrospectively check metadata application in order to identify any potential problem areas.

  • Ensure end-user testing of tools and applications are completed as required and perform any gap analysis as needed.

  • Work closely with Business, Technology and Data Strategy stakeholders--including Strategic Services’ Autocoding, Quality and Solutions--to improve workflows, streamline data, and effectively manage resources.

  • Engage with Content Strategists and Solutions to identify ways to maximize the use of existing metadata, as well as to uncover new metadata opportunities.

  • Directly supervise work of Metadata Specialist and maximize career opportunities

Skills & Experience

  • At least five years demonstrated experience with metadata.

  • Understanding of Factiva & DNA product and services.

  • Understanding of Dow Jones Intelligent Identifiers.

  • Proven ability to manage resources (directly or indirectly).

  • Highly reliable, responsible and accountable for team and individual goals.

  • Excellent research & analytical skills. Ability to use online tools to extract key information.

  • Detail-oriented and ability to prioritize.

  • Experience with automatic classification and taxonomy management tools.

  • Familiarity with XML standards and applications.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, multi-project environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and to high quality standards.

  • Positive outlook on change and flexible approach to work environment and structure.

  • Fluent English (additional language an advantage but not essential).
