Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced Graphics Editor to join an award-winning team of visual journalists to drive innovative storytelling with graphics, interactives and multimedia. You will be based in our London office.

You will be responsible for directing, pitching, and creating visual stories for all platforms. You will report to the Visual Editor, International, based in New York, and will help make decisions and recommendations related to coverage priorities and assignments from London. You will have some supervisory tasks, directing three graphics reporters in London, and scheduling and running regular brainstorming meetings with the broader newsroom. You will also create enterprise and breaking news graphics for business, international news, and other topic areas. You will support senior editors in the department as needed on broader leadership work, such as managing special projects.


  • Work with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.

  • Review visual pitches and use judgment and expertise to decide which should become visual assignments.

  • Direct, assign, and support three graphics reporters with visual, technical and editorial guidance, inspiring them to do their best work.

  • Support any other on-the-ground needs for staff, including schedules and vacation.

  • Pitch and create enterprise and breaking news visuals for all platforms.

  • Work closely with the Visual Editor to assign and produce work.

  • Create and shape new workflows and processes in a fast-paced, global, and cross-platform newsroom.

  • Edit visual stories.

  • Stay abreast, and ahead of, new storytelling trends and techniques.

  • Support the growth of the visual department by recruiting talented visual journalists.

Job requirements:

  • A minimum of three years of experience in a newsroom, ideally 4-6 years.

  • Excellent visual skills, including demonstrable design knowledge, such as layout, typography, color, interaction design, and fluency with Adobe tools.

  • Strong cartography skills are a bonus.

  • Expertise with charting and other data visualization techniques.

  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and its libraries, especially D3.

  • Experience with data journalism and associated tools, such as Excel, or R.

  • Knowledge of responsive design, and the technical nuances of the digital landscape.

  • Able to schedule and run effective meetings in person or remotely.

  • Demonstrable experience leading a team successfully.

  • Able to prioritize best opportunities for visual stories using judgment and strategic acumen.

  • A creative vision and willing to share and collaborate on new ideas.

  • Able to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.

  • Able to train reporters and editors to learn new skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling.
