The Counsel, Privacy position is part of our global privacy function, and based in our London, England, office. The attorney in this role will assist with our global privacy function initiatives such as privacy awareness, accountability, and compliance, and will also directly support the business regarding privacy issues. This attorney will also serve as the Data Protection Officer for our EMEA region.
The position will report to the Dow Jones Chief Privacy Officer/Privacy Leader.
Expertise and Professional Qualities:
Experience navigating or operating within global data protection laws and requirements, including extensive knowledge of the details and practical application of current European data protection legislation including the GDPR;
Possess integrity, professional ethics, and sound judgement in managing risks;
Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently, under pressure, and enforce company-wide standards;
Ability to communicate effectively with the highest levels of management within the organization and external stakeholders to provide advice regarding data protection questions, risks, contract terms, and issues;
Experience implementing data protection policies, procedures, and training materials, and promoting a culture of data protection compliance across business functions;
Ability to communicate effectively with data subjects, data protection authorities, works councils, and other controllers and processors across national boundaries and cultures;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong presentation / negotiation skills;
Adequate self-awareness and confidence to recognize knowledge gaps and seek to fill them from reliable sources;
Strong commercial awareness and analytical skills, and ability to develop innovative and pragmatic approaches to privacy and security issues in support of business initiatives;
Familiarity with privacy and security risk assessment, best practices and gap analysis, privacy certifications/seals, information technology programming and infrastructure, and information security practices and audits, preferred; and
Experience in the media and/or compliance industry, and with marketing operations, preferred.
Foster a data protection culture within the organization and help to develop, implement, and/or maintain essential elements of the global privacy program, such as the data subjects’ rights response process, privacy impact assessments (PIAs), data protection impact assessments (DPIAs), data protection by design and by default, records of processing activities, security of processing, awareness training, and notification and communication of data breaches;
As the Data Protection Officer for EMEA, cooperate with and serve as the contact point for the designated supervisory and other data protection authorities, and consult as needed with executives or data protection authorities on issues relating to processing;
Inform, advise and issue recommendations to the Company regarding compliance with applicable data protection laws including GDPR, and Company policies and guidelines with respect to data protection;
Identify and manage risks related to data protection, and escalate data protection risks and issues as needed;
Offer consultation in relation to information security or privacy events and related remedial actions, and contract negotiations involving data protection terms; and
Attend regular/ongoing privacy training.
Juris Doctor, or equivalent, is required.
Extensive experience in handling privacy matters full time in house or at a law firm (or combination) is required.
CIPP(E) (Certified Information Privacy Professional (Europe)) preferred.
A second language (ideally French, German, Italian, or Spanish) is advantageous but not required.
This position is based in London, with some potential regional/EU and US travel required.
