Job Description:

Role - Assistant General Counsel, Privacy

Location - London

The Assistant General Counsel Privacy position is part of our global privacy function, and based in our London, England office. The attorney in this role will assist with our global privacy function initiatives such as privacy awareness, accountability, and compliance, and will also directly support the business regarding privacy issues. This attorney will also serve as the Data Protection Officer for our EMEA region.

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Experience navigating or operating within global data protection laws and requirements, including extensive knowledge of the details and practical application of current European data protection legislation including the GDPR, UK GDPR and PECR;

  • Possess integrity, professional ethics, and sound judgement in managing risks;

  • Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently, under pressure, and enforce company-wide standards;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the highest levels of management within the organization and external stakeholders to provide advice regarding data protection questions, risks, contract terms, and issues;

  • Experience implementing data protection policies, procedures, and training materials, and promoting a culture of data protection compliance across business functions;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with data subjects, data protection authorities, works councils, and other controllers and processors across national boundaries and cultures;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong presentation / negotiation skills;

  • Adequate self-awareness and confidence to recognize knowledge gaps and seek to fill them from reliable sources;

  • Strong commercial awareness and analytical skills, and ability to develop innovative and pragmatic approaches to privacy and security issues in support of business initiatives; and

  • Experience in the media and/or compliance industry, and with marketing operations, preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster a data protection culture within the organization and help to develop, implement, and/or maintain essential elements of the global privacy program, such as the data subjects’ rights response process, data protection impact assessments (DPIAs), data protection by design and by default, records of processing activities, privacy awareness training, and notification and communication of data breaches;

  • As the Data Protection Officer for EMEA, cooperate with and serve as the primary contact point for the data protection authorities, and consult as needed with executives or data protection authorities on issues relating to processing;

  • Inform, advise and issue recommendations to the Company regarding compliance with applicable data protection laws including GDPR, and Company policies and guidelines with respect to data protection;

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders in the review of projects and related data to ensure compliance with data protection laws;

  • Identify and manage risks related to data protection, and escalate data protection risks and issues as needed;

  • Maintain updated knowledge of legal and regulatory developments that are relevant to the business, including in online privacy and ePrivacy;

  • Help maintain privacy notices and data protection precedents, and advise on and negotiate data protection issues within commercial contracts; and

  • Attend regular/ongoing privacy training.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor, or equivalent, is required.

  • Substantial legal experience, with demonstrable experience in a data privacy function full time either in house or at a law firm (or combination).

  • CIPP(E) (Certified Information Privacy Professional (Europe)) preferred.

  • A second language (ideally French, German, Italian, or Spanish) is advantageous but not required.
