Job Description:

Associate Director, Global Steel Business Development

McCloskey by OPIS has an opening in its steel raw materials team for an Associate Director, Global Steel Business Development.

The successful candidate will take a leadership role within McCloskey's growing steel practice, with a focus on Green Steel. You will be a critical part of our Steel and Steel Raw Materials group. You will create cohesion between our research team and sales by guiding business development.

By the end of their first year you will have established a network of industry contacts who are accessing and using our steel and raw materials content. You will also chart a path to make our name a leader in this new business area by helping draw global marketing and business development plans for the content.

This is a senior position working daily with the research product and sales teams, reporting to the product management leader. You should not only understand the industry, but be able to communicate the value of our products to market, and help drive our product roadmap with customer feedback.

We are looking for a dynamic and engaging person, who enjoys building relationships, gaining expertise, and earning trust with our clients based on their industry knowledge.

You will also work alongside our industry-leading journalists and price reporters.

Responsibilities

  • Work with sales and product leaders to create a business development roadmap for our content

  • Work with sales to identify important target customers and create sales plays to address their specific needs

  • Develop and execute a business plan to grow and enhance our existing products globally, and develop new products.

  • Identify key problems and challenges facing our customers and work to solve them using our existing content

  • Engage in business development, assisting OPIS' account managers in the sales process through maintaining sales pipelines and assisting in the sales process

  • Provide clear feedback to the research and content team to shape our product roadmap

  • Liaise with the marketing team to develop key messaging and communication programmes

  • Use industry conversations to help reporters uncover stories and improve their sourcing of pricing and research development

  • Continue the OPIS legacy of providing the highest-quality customer support in the industry

  • Increase new revenue and support the team in meeting retention and renewal strategy goals

  • Maintain monthly and weekly deliverables covering steel and its related products, with an early focus on Green Steel

  • Periodic research pieces on topical industry issues (eg. regulatory/policy developments, geopolitical issues, investment, project pipeline, ESG etc)

  • Maintain client and industry relationships – bringing these relationships from prior roles. Continually share and source market intelligence.

  • Be a public face of McCloskey and OPIS in the steel space, via client/stakeholder engagements, industry presentations, media interviews, content marketing

Required Skills

  • Experience in the steel or steel raw materials industries and markets including in business negotiations and internal / external relationship management

  • Ability to understand and demonstrate the value proposition for our steel and raw materials products

  • Strong grasp of price reporting and research in the area of steel raw materials with a focus on industry workflows

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, impact and influence skills.

  • Not afraid to strike up a conversation with someone in a professional environment and are happily developing and nurturing relationships with important industry contacts.

  • Confident speaking with clients of all job levels and titles, from the daily users of our services all the way up to C-level contacts at some of the largest retail companies in the world

  • Excellent ability to present and to lead public discussions (eg. moderating panels at conferences)

  • Strong qualitative skills (strong MS Excel and VBA, knowledge of Python, SQL, PowerBI advantageous)

  • Exemplary written communication skills

  • Good planning skills and attention to detail to successfully plan business development strategy and complete annual renewals and to develop and implement longer-term retention strategies

  • Ability to work within a team while sometimes operating alone

  • Excellent relationship building skills ensuring ongoing industry credibility

  • Bachelor degree (in in a quantitative discipline preferred)
