Job Description:

Director: Polyolefins - Americas

Job Summary:

The individual will be responsible for developing and supporting Chemical Market Analytics polyolefins practice in the Americas by providing market research and insight relative to the polyethylene and polypropylene markets. The individual is expected to possess expert product knowledge with extensive commercial experience directly related to the polyolefins industry. The individual shall provide thought leadership relating to supply, demand, price, and economics, as well as competitive dynamics and changing industry structural elements. A strong knowledge of the technical interface between polyolefins production and processing is essential, as well as deep commercial experience. The individual will be a key external interface for these markets and provide coordination with relevant internal functions. The position requires working with existing spreadsheets, models, and databases and interfacing with other Chemical Market Analytics researchers concerning upstream feedstocks and downstream derivatives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Completes primary research and analysis for polyolefins markets in the Americas. Research includes producer capacities, operating status, production costs, supply/demand balance, trade flows, pricing, new projects, general market dynamics, individual company analysis, and econometric modeling.

  • Establishes and maintains a reputation for polyolefins market expertise.

  • Builds and nourishes North American and Latin America polyolefins industry contact relationships across producers, consumers, distributors, traders, and the financial community. Leverages contacts to collect critical market information for regular reporting and insightful analysis and forecasting for existing and potential clients.

  • Regularly provides unique, neutral and objectively written Global Polyolefins Market Advisory Service content including the monthly report, Focus Reports and the World Polyolefins Analysis.

  • Develops and maintains an understanding of Chemical Market Analytics supply/demand, econometric price forecast, and trade grid models. Maintains the North America and Latin America production capacity database and supply-demand balances and price forecasts. Utilizes analytical approaches to enhance insight and deliver value to clients.

  • Develops new and unique approaches to leverage Chemical Market Analytics data and models for enhanced predictive services.

  • Develops and delivers market presentations at Chemical Market Analytics and external events. Pursues opportunities to present information in client meetings and at conferences. Actively markets Chemical Market Analytics services.

  • Contributes to global polyolefins team dynamics to ensure consistent global market coverage and analysis.

  • Supports the Circular Plastics Service relative to analyzing circular plastics trends impacting polyolefins markets.

  • Identifies new business opportunities for sales and consulting follow-up. Provides polyolefin related market expertise for Chemical Market Analytics Consulting projects and Sales client development.

  • Operate as key liaison with the Port of Houston and understand regional and global logistics. Develop relationships with principal packaging facilities to understand critical export dynamics of the region.

  • Provide written commentary for weekly, monthly, and annual market insight publications including price trends, supply/demand outlooks, and current events affecting the various markets.

  • Solid understanding of key polyolefin technologies applicable to producers and processors.

  • This individual will possess a solid understanding of recycle and sustainability initiatives for plastics.

  • Ability to lead base chem weather special reports in response to industry events such as hurricanes, freezes, fires, force majeure events, etc.

The position reports to the Global Plastics and Polymers Report Market Advisory Service Leader.

Characteristics of the ideal candidate include:

  • Ten or more years of chemical industry experience, including commercial polyolefins experience and team leadership experience.

  • University degreed. Chemical engineering or chemistry degree preferred, economics will be considered; MBA or other graduate degree is desirable

  • Understands the Chemical Market Analytics business model

  • Established relationships at multiple levels, including executive management with key polyolefins buy and sell side market participants.

  • Outgoing personality: Ability and willingness to establish and maintain personal relationships and develop high degree of trust at multiple levels within a client’s organization

  • Demonstrated “team player”; ability to internalize organizational strategy and objectives and provide peer leadership for collaborative success. Drives for action and results.

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills; ability to identify and articulate core/essential issues within complex problems and deliver insights and solutions. Deals well with ambiguity and contradiction.

  • Demonstrated skills with respect to multi-tasking, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines in high pressure environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluent English speaker – Spanish and or Portuguese a plus. Writing samples required.

  • Organized and persuasive public speaker for large and small audiances – effectively distills complex information into key points

  • Strong computer modelling and excel spreadsheet management skills.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
