Under minimal supervision, at the direction of supervisory staff, including the Foreman and/or Assistant Foreman, may rotate through work positions in the press, mail and plate rooms on a continuing basis.
The Pressroom portion of the position involves, but not limited to, the preparation, layout, operation and maintenance of printing presses and related equipment. Duties include, but are not limited to, setting and maintaining a balance of ink and water, registration of printing, operating ABB ink setting controls, operating the press folder as well as handling, preparing and loading paper on the press, preparation of pasters, preparing the reel room report and related duties.
Maintenance duties include, but are not limited to, replacing and setting rollers, blankets, spray bars and page packs and general press unit maintenance. Is responsible for quality control during a press run, and the cleanup and maintenance of printing units and folders. During a press run, must constantly check reproduction to see if it is clear, registered and that the ink is properly set within a specified density range.
The Mailroom portion of the position involves, but limited to, processing newspapers for distribution which may include operating addressing, stacking, inserting and bundle processing equipment. May also be responsible for correctly dispatching the papers and helping out in the pressroom during downtime.
The Plateroom portion of the position involves, but not limited to, the following duties:
The operation of PC-based imaging and press proof software applications.
Imaging and processing plates and verifying registration.
Checking plates to ensure both are free of defects as well as verifying printed copies for accuracy and quality.
Communicating with and monitoring pre-press communications via the order wire for critical run time information and relaying information to management.
Operation of production information management system software (PDIMS) to record nightly run time data such as film and plate lock-up times as well as tracking consumables.
Assistance with cleaning and scheduled preventative maintenance of equipment and general housekeeping.
It is the responsibility of each Press/Mail Operator to minimize white waste, printed waste and press downtime attributed to paster breaks, running breaks and other mechanical or operational failures. Must work together as a team to produce consistent quality of reproduction, to meet dispatch schedules and to maintain an efficient and cost effective operation. Also responsible for assisting with training for Press/Mail Assistants and Trainees. Additional duties may be assigned from time to time. Position requires standing, lifting, bending and physical exertion throughout the shift. Good PC and mechanical aptitude necessary.
