The Wall Street Journal seeks a penetrating reporter to cover the conundrum that is China and how its authoritarian system manages a dynamic society. The reporter would be part of a team reporting on general news and politics. These are beats that cover a lot of ground, much of it shifting. China’s more and more a global power, but with a political leadership whose decisionmaking is often a black box. Meanwhile, the government is trying to control a society in the midst of economic and social change, as social media proliferates, costs of living rise, and the factory and farm jobs that made China prosperous move to other countries. The position, to be based in Beijing, calls for a reporter with a determination to break news and to craft analytical, deeply reported pieces that take readers beyond the headlines. Working as part of a team is a must. Chinese language ability is a plus.
