International Terrorism and Extremist Movements reporter
The Journal is looking for an experienced reporter who can cover terrorism, terrorist groups and counter-terrorism efforts in the U.S. and around the world. This reporter will be someone who is or can rapidly become an expert on terrorist groups and movements such as al Qaeda, ISIS, al-Shabaab, Boko Haram, the Haqqani Network, Ansar al Sharia, Lakshar-e-Taiba along with dozens of others and their many offshoots as well as their leaders, followers and modes and areas of operation. The reporter will have or develop capabilities for following major groups on social media and keep abreast of changes in leadership or geographic influence to convey important implications to readers.
As well, this reporter will need to understand the varied ways the U.S. intelligence and law enforcement community is arrayed against terrorist groups and report on significant enforcement and operational news, ranging from financial sanctions to covert action. Of course, other countries are involved in the hunt for terrorists, and it will be important to both have a first hand acquaintance with what other governments are doing as well as make use of expertise that other Journal reporters around the world may have. Just as this reporter will tap into the FBI, Treasury Department, Homeland Security and Intelligence community in the U.S., he or she also will have to be well sourced among intelligence agencies of other countries. Understanding how nations work together -- and don’t -- to combat the challenges of terrorism will be key to understanding terrorism. Finally, there are many excellent scholars, organizations and individuals who can help understand the causes and results of terrorism.
This reporter will figure prominently on many stories, most obviously playing a lead role when there are significant terrorist attacks anywhere in the world, both covering the attacks, sifting their aftermath, shedding light on the methodology, using sources to identify groups and operatives involved and closely tracking the resulting counterterrorism action. This reporter also will report on or major actions in the U.S. and elsewhere to combat terrorist forces, whether military or covert operations or enforcement actions. This reporter will have expertise and tools that will prove valuable, for example, in aiding coverage of localized terrorist incidents by reporters in far-flung bureaus.
The international terrorism reporter would be part of the Washington Bureau’s national security team and would work particularly closely with the Washington intelligence reporter and the Washington Justice Department, FBI and Treasury reporters, who also must have a working knowledge of terrorism.
Applications should include a resume, cover letter, and up to five published clips.
