Job Description:

Deputy Chief Financial Officer

Seeking an operational and strategic Deputy CFO who can serve as a strong financial partner to the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. The candidate will work effectively across business and financial functions to lead financial operations and broad change initiatives. After a short transition period, the successful candidate will likely act as the day-to-day financial leader of the company

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, the Deputy CFO will oversee a global finance team of more than 275 people based in New York, Princeton, London and Hong Kong with additional staff in China, Singapore and Japan. S/he will lead key finance functions including Financial Planning and Analysis, Accounting and Finance Operations globally. The Deputy CFO will be a business partner to the broader Dow Jones senior management team and will engage regularly with the News Corporation leadership team. S/he will be responsiblefor all aspects of financial reporting, including closing the books and regularly reporting results to the executive leadership teams of both Dow Jones and News Corporation.

The Deputy CFO will have the ability to both understand/support the Company’s strategic vision and serve as a tactical, day-to-day leader. The individual will possess great strength and a bias for action, with the ability to bring routine order to the business and drive for results. The Deputy CFO will be an excellent communicator, with the ability to develop themes and relay them clearly to staff and leadership.

The successful candidate will possess excellent judgment and business instincts, with the ability to prioritize and separate the important from the truly critical. Importantly, the Deputy CFO will be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment to identify issues in a timely manner, communicate them proactively to key stakeholders, and take the necessary steps to drive to a solution.

As an agent of change, the Deputy CFO will have the ability to work effectively within the culture of the organization and collaborate with people at all levels, including those of varying skill sets, even as s/he works to develop or transition them.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate must bring both strategic and operational finance leadership to the organization and will be a close business partner to the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, serving as a key member of the senior leadership team. From an operational perspective, the Deputy CFO must be comfortable navigating the operations of a global publishing, media or information services business, with the ability to work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to develop appropriate and achievable short- and long-term company objectives.


Candidates for the role are likely operating in divisional CFO positions of similar sized or larger businesses or standalone CFO positions at a smaller company with meaningful complexity. The ideal candidate will have substantial finance experience and ideally will have worked in businesses that have undergone significant growth. A CPA is preferable but not required if the candidate can demonstrate through experience the ability to cover the full range of business and operational finance functions, including controllership.

Qualified candidates for this important position would need to demonstrate the following critical competencies:

The Deputy CFO will need to communicate clear, accurate, and timely financial and strategic information to both internal and external parties. Internally, s/he will need to demonstrate the ability to influence decision making as a result of his/her credibility and functional expertise and also by demonstrating leadership, initiative and the ability to build strong partnerships. This will require the successful candidate to assimilate others’ ideas and input, while shaping and influencing decisions that maximize shareholders’ returns.

S/he must show the ability to negotiate, to reconcile competing demands, adapting their style and approach to suit the objective and audience, while maintaining a consistent direction and message. The candidate must have a proven ability to develop strong professional networks and be seen as a trusted advisor to others.

  • Strategic Orientation: The successful candidate will be creative and capable of thinking broadly about business – not just financial issues. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to work with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer to help shape the Company’s business and financial strategy. Candidates will be able to demonstrate contributions to the strategic success of their prior companies in roles that might include business unit financial management or general management or strategic planning
